We recently told you about an important victory for women: the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a final rule providing contraceptives without co-pays AND without an expansion of the religious employer exemption.
But contraception opponents aren’t giving up, even though there is a religious exemption: they’ve launched a full-court press to try to overturn this crucial decision. They’ve filed court cases, they’re pressuring politicians and they’re taking to the airwaves and editorial pages in a coordinated effort to try to turn back the clock on contraceptive coverage. They don’t want you covered, and we can’t let them win.
Please help NWLC push back, by making a generous donation to support this fight on contraceptive coverage and our other fights to protect women and women’s health.
Over the summer, HHS deemed birth control a necessary preventive health service, thus requiring insurance plans to cover it without co-pays under the Affordable Care Act. This month’s announcement affirmed that momentous decision, and your work was vital in assuring that it happened. Since the summer, you sent over 100,000 comments in favor of the policy, and HHS listened.
The agency’s decision did allow a narrow set of religious employers to deny this critical coverage to their employees. But opponents of contraception aren’t satisfied: while they’d prefer the coverage to be dropped altogether, for now they’re trying to find alternative routes to expand the exception to include religiously “affiliated” hospitals, universities and other organizations. More than 1 million employees and the women in their families would be affected if they were to succeed.
We can’t let them win — help us work to keep this vital advance in place.
For many years, the National Women’s Law Center has advocated for equity in health insurance coverage, including working to ensure that women have access to affordable contraception and other preventive services. And, with support from friends like you, this year the hard work paid off. Please don’t let this victory be temporary — help us protect the contraceptive coverage decision and fight for other issues so vital to women.
You helped before and we won. But the struggle isn’t over, and I know you’ll do your part once again. Thank you.
Sincerely,

Posted by Kori Schulman on January 31, 2012 at 10:01 AM EST

Today, President Obama recognized the one-year anniversary of Startup America, the White House initiative to celebrate, inspire, and accelerate high-growth entrepreneurship throughout the nation.

As part of the Administration’s commitment to unleash market opportunities for entrepreneurs, in December we launched the Startup America Policy Challenge to identify high-impact ideas to support entrepreneurship in areas of national interest: education, energy, and health care.

To kick off the challenge, Secretary Arne Duncan (Department of Education), Secretary Steven Chu (Department of Energy), and Secretary Kathleen Sebelius (Department of Health and Human Services) each asked the American public for ideas about how the U.S. government can break down barriers to entrepreneurship and enable the use of clean energy, digital learning, and health information technologies.

The dialogue on Quora continues to be inspiring, with impassioned discussion about how to best enable use of these technologies, including discussion about how to tear down barriers to customer adoption. In the spirit of today’s focus on innovators, I also want to pose the question directly to entrepreneurs:

Ed-tech entrepreneurs – what’s your biggest barrier to introducing learning technologies solutions into the marketplace?

Clean-tech entrepreneurs – what’s your biggest barrier to introducing clean energy innovations into the marketplace?

Health IT entrepreneurs – what’s your biggest barrier to introducing healthcare IT solutions into the marketplace?

Entrepreneurs and innovators are busy, though, building their businesses. Other than a response on Quora, they may not have the time or interest in thinking about the idea translates to policy solutions. That’s why I’m pleased to announce today that a network of universities have responded to the Startup America Policy Challenge, launching a contest for students and other solvers to compete to develop the best “policy business plans.”

The independent contest is open to students, problem solvers and the American public at large – anyone who wants to take the ideas from the Policy Challenge and turn them into compelling policy proposals. Finalists will get a chance to attend a conference in Washington D.C. and present their full proposals to a panel of high-profile expert judges with backgrounds in government, industry, and academia—and winning proposals will be shared with the Cabinet Secretary from the relevant federal agency.

Celebrating Startups in the State of the Union

Posted by MIke Krieger on January 31, 2012 at 8:00 AM EST

Ed note: In honor of the one year anniversary of Startup America, we invited Mike Krieger, the co-founder of Instagram, to contribute a post to WhiteHouse.gov. Instagram is the fastest growing social mobile startup in the U.S. today, and exemplifies President Obama’s belief that “entrepreneurs embody the promise of America: the idea that if you have a good idea and are willing to work hard and see it through, you can succeed in this country. And in fulfilling this promise, entrepreneurs also play a critical role in expanding our economy and creating jobs.” Mr. Krieger moved from Brazil to California to attend Stanford University, where he studied computer science and cognitive science. In 2010, he and a partner founded Instagram, which now employs a talented, growing team of designers and engineers. After graduation, Mr. Krieger worked for a year on his student F-1 visa, later applying for and receiving an H-1B visa as a high-skill worker. Mr. Krieger wants to permanently stay in the U.S. and has applied for a green card.

I was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and from an early age was interested in technology and engineering. When I came to the United States in 2004 to attend university at Stanford, I was instantly inspired by the stories and advice from startup leaders in Silicon Valley and beyond, who had endeavoured to create new opportunities and improve lives around the world. I was drawn to the idea of one day helping to create a startup, and last year, I was fortunate to be given the chance. In May of 2010, I joined Kevin Systrom, my co-founder, and we created Instagram, a mobile social network that today has over 15 million users. What began as a small, two-person startup working out of a pier in San Francisco has grown to a dozen employees, and our plan is to at least double that this year. There are few better sights than walking into an office full of talented, hard-working folks, working together to build a great company from the ground up.

(Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili was at the White House today for a meeting with President Obama. The leaders discussed relations between our two countries, Georgia’s contributions to the military operation in Afghanistan, and the potential for a free trade agreement between the United States and Georgia.

In recent years, commerce between the two countries has been increasing, and President Obama described the potential free trade agreement agreement as a “win-win”:

Obviously, there’s a lot of work to be done and there are going to be a lot of options that are going to be explored. The key point, though, is we think it’s a win-win for the United States and for Georgia as we continue to find opportunities for businesses to invest in Georgia, for us to be able to sell Georgia our goods and services, and Georgia to be able to sell theirs as well.

Georgia is one of 50 nations helping to fight the war in Afghanistan, and a point President Obama also took the time to note.

“They have been one of the most dedicated contributors outside of NATO to the ISAF effort,” he said, “And in fact have taken on some significant casualties as a consequence of those efforts.”

Today’s meeting marked the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Regulatory Reform Progress

Posted by Cass Sunstein on January 30, 2012 at 5:07 PM EST

To promote economic growth and job creation, we need cost-justified, evidence-based regulation. Which is why, almost exactly a year ago, President Obama issued an Executive Order calling for a government-wide review of regulations to reduce costs, to eliminate unnecessary burdens, and to get rid of what the President has called “absurd and unnecessary paperwork requirements that waste time and money.” Twenty-six executive agencies produced final plans, spanning over 800 pages and offering more than 500 proposals. Sixteen independent agencies followed suit, responding to a historic request from the President to eliminate unjustified costs on their own.

And today, agency updates on regulatory reform progress can be found here.

Last year, New York state showed what a difference a governor can make in the fight for marriage equality.

In 2012, Washingtonians have a chance to elect another governor who will always stand up and fight for equal rights: my friend, Jay Inslee.

Jay is facing a tough race against a well-funded opponent — one whose stance on equality couldn’t be further from Jay’s. With landmark marriage equality legislation making its way through the Washington legislature as we speak, Washington will need a governor who can be counted on to stand up and fight for all Washingtonians’ equal rights.

Will you join me and contribute $5 or more to Jay’s campaign today?

All it takes is a quick look at each candidate’s previous statements to figure out where they stand on marriage equality.

Jay is unequivocal. He says, “I believe in marriage equality,” and that equality for all couples is a “quintessential Washington value.”

And Jay took this principled stand at the very beginning of his campaign for governor — before everyone’s eyes were focused on the marriage equality fight in Washington.

Not Rob McKenna. He thinks marriage equality “threatens to destroy all standards we apply to the right of marriage” and has equated it to polygamy.

As Washington’s next governor, one of these men will be responsible for enforcing Washington’s marriage equality legislation. One of these men will lead a state government that will have to choose whether or not to stand by Washington’s gay and lesbian families when that legislation’s validity is challenged.

Only one of these men can be trusted to take on that job: Jay Inslee.

Join me today and help make sure Washington’s next governor is one who stands on the side of equality and will stand in defense of the progress we’ve made.

Make a contribution of $5 or more to Jay’s campaign today.

As a long-time advocate of marriage equality, the progress we have made across this country in the last few years is inspiring.

We couldn’t have done it without the grassroots efforts of millions of people standing together, and we couldn’t have done it without courageous elected officials who refuse to accept discrimination any longer.

The grassroots momentum for marriage equality is building in Washington. As Jay said earlier this week — “We are standing at the edge of history.”

Now we need to make sure Washington’s next chief executive is one who will champion this movement and fight for us.

Contribute $5 or more to support Jay Inslee and help elect a pro-equality governor for Washington.

Thank you for your generous support of Jay’s campaign.

Sincerely,

The Clean Air Act requires the State of Texas and EPA to reduce and eliminate this haze. Under EPA’s proposed rule, however, Texas’s oldest and dirtiest power plants would be exempted from installing readily-available, modern pollution controls – instead they could purchase emissions allowances from states as far away as Minnesota and South Carolina.

We can’t allow old dirty coal plants to be exempt from clean air rules that keep our families safe and our health intact. Not only that, but we need to make sure that our National Parks are preserved for visitors and for future generations.

If you had the chance to watch President Obama’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday, you know how much emphasis he put on boosting the middle class and making sure the wealthy are paying their fair share. Senate Democrats are standing with him. Three more of our candidates have posted strong fundraising numbers; I’ll give you the details below. Tommy Thompson is waffling in Wisconsin, and you won’t BELIEVE the guy New York Republicans want to run for Senate. In Ohio, Josh Mandel is ignoring his job as Treasurer in order to raise money in Washington D.C. Meanwhile, John Boehner of all people makes the case for why we need to keep the Senate blue.
Senate Democrats Stand with the Middle Class In the wake of President Obama’s State of the Union, Senate Democrats are planning an aggressive legislative agenda on behalf of the middle class. The agenda likely will put Republicans on the record as favoring the interests of the 1%. “We’re going to push serious proposals to help create middle class jobs,” Sen. Chuck Schumer said. “We’re going to defend Medicare. And we will pursue tax reform that makes sense for the middle class.” Sounds great to me. Read more »
Kaine, McCaskill, Tester Post Strong 4th Quarter Three more strong 4th quarter FEC totals to report: Virginia’s Tim Kaine raised $1.65 million and has $3.3 million on hand; Missouri’s Sen. Claire McCaskill raised $1.4 million and has nearly $5 million on hand; and Montana’s Sen. Jon Tester raised almost $1.2 million and has $3.8 million on hand. These totals are especially important because all three candidates have already been targeted with attack ads from Karl Rove’s shady third-party groups.
We’re Fighting Back, but We Need Your Help! Next Tuesday is our big January FEC deadline, and we still need $365,000. Meeting this goal is extremely important – fall short, and we won’t have the resources we need to defend President Obama, counteract Karl Rove and prevent a total GOP takeover of Congress. If you haven’t given, could you click this link and give $5 now? We rely on grassroots donations for 90% of our gifts, and we sure could use yours. Thank you.
Tommy Thompson Waffles on Scott Walker Is Wisconsin Republican Tommy Thompson for or against Gov. Scott Walker’s policies? Your guess is as good as mine. Last weekend, Thompson hyped Walker at a rally of the governor’s staunchest supporters. But only two days later, Thompson distanced himself from some of Walker’s more controversial policies – the policies that led to an unprecedented recall election petition drive that netted more than 1 million signatures. Read more »
NYGOP Wants THIS GUY to Run for Senate? This week, news broke that Marc Cenedella – the CEO of TheLadders.com who’s being recruited to run against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand – has an “interesting” blog, for lack of a better term. Cenedella’s blog includes posts that degrade women, advocate polygamy and discuss illegal drugs. It’s pretty pathetic if this is the best candidate Republicans can come up with. Read more »
Mandel Puts Politics Ahead of Doing Job Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel this week proved he’s more interested in running for Senate than doing his job. On Thursday, he again skipped the meeting of the powerful state board that makes decisions on the state’s investments in order to attend his own Senate campaign fundraiser. In fact, Mandel has yet to attend ANY of these monthly meetings, which makes him “unique among modern-era treasurers.” It’s time Mandel focuses on the job he’s got instead of the next one he wants. Read more »
Boehner Makes Case for Why Dems Holding the Senate is So Important Here’s incentive for Democrats to keep fighting: Speaker John Boehner this week claimed that the GOP will hold the House for at least the next decade. Can you imagine the horrible legislation Republicans would pass if they had total control of Washington? That’s why we’re hard at work every day to make sure President Obama is re-elected, and Democrats hold onto the Senate. Read more »
